The economic prosperity of Pakistan is closely linked to all forms of energy. Due to urbanization, global warming and climate change there are an energy demand which increases on a daily basis.

Pakistan poses to be an energy deficient country, due to the following aspects:

  • Shortage of supply mix to create energy
  • A rising energy variant betwixt supply and demand.

Alternative ways of saving & generating electricity via renewable resources should be adopted for overcoming Pakistan’s energy crisis.

The Conservation of Energy and Improving Energy Efficiency 

The first action to take is saving and conserving energy within the following facilities:

  • Domestic
  • Industrial
  • Commercial
  • Institutional

Although every of the above-mentioned facilities are attempting to conserve energy, it is true that the process is not fast enough, due to the absence of energy conservation legislation as well as its implementation.

Currently the most superior activity to save energy is to replace incandescent lights with CFL (compact fluorescent lighting). This activity is capable to save energy, although it is insufficient.

Activities which should be adopted to save energy in domestic, industrial, commercial & institutional facilities, include:

  • Using materials in buildings which are energy efficient
  • Insulating of walls, roofs, ducts & pipes

  • Lighting which switch off automatically should be installed
  • Replacing conventional lighting with Solar & LED Lighting
  • Exterior lighting controls should be installed

Joint efforts were made by ENERCON & the Pakistan Engineering Council in completing the country’s Building Energy Code (2010)  by using a task crew comprising of professionals from multiple sectors. The Izhar Group made a contribution too.

However, energy saving targets can’t be achieved without legislation & implementation.

Renewable & Alternative Energy Applications as a Solution of Energy Crisis in Pakistan

Solar Thermal

Solar Thermal is a procedure through which heating & cooling are generated via solar radiations.

Solar water heaters poses to be an economical option to use in all facilities. However, due to insufficient knowledge, installation & operational skills, the growth in this application is hampered.

Incentives by the Pakistani government, whilst making it compulsory via the Building Energy Code, can stimulate the growth in this application. For a solution of energy crisis in Pakistan.

Solar and Led Lighting

This is an excellent energy saving option. However, the high percentage charged on import duties of LED and Solar lights, is the obstacle in its growth.

A stimulus which can increase this sector’s growth, is to reduce the duties to zero. It is estimated that a conventional search light of 400 watts can be substituted for LED search lights with an estimated 80 watt.

By replacing the conventional lights in Government & Pakistani buildings by using LED lights, will result in saving approximately one fifth energy/

Solar Photovoltaics

By using the process of solar photovoltaic, electricity is generated through solar radiations, which is called PV.

The PV components comprises of the following:

  • Inverter & charge Controllers
  • Solar Panels
  • Mountings
  • Cables & accessories
  • Deep Cycle Batteries

However, the solution of solar PV is unaffordable, due to its price which comes at $8 per watt. The high price is due to the fact that 40% duties are charged on the PV components.

Recently the media reported that the duties was reduced by the government to a zero rate.  Should the news about zero duty is correct, for all times, it will increase growth within the PV sector which can assist to save energy.

Thus, Grid Tied involves a procedure where the user can sell the electricity back into the grid, at a set fee-in tariff.

The implementation of a policy of Grid Tied will be an actual solution of energy crisis in Pakistan.

Wind Power

Wind Power as an alternative energy solution is a more affordable option, whilst Pakistan has excellent potential when it comes to wind power.  The obstacle in the growth of wind power, involves a lengthy procedure to acquire land as well as coordinating the issues of the developers of wind power with that of the Governmental Institutions.

However, implementing the AE & RE policy 2010, may stimulate a fast growth where wind power is concerned.

Energy Administration Authority

The absence of an exclusive Energy Administration Authority to regulate the energy sector, is another obstacle where the growth of Renewable & Alternative applications is concerned.

It is highly recommended that a single Energy Administration Authority come in power for streamlining policymaking.

Improving the energy efficiency, whilst using renewable & alternative energy applications can render assistance to overcome the energy crisis of the country.
